Skip Out on Midtown Monotony
Whether you’re a Midtown Manhattanite, another borough-dweller, or outside of NYC entirely, the East Coast summers are known for their clichés. The Jersey Shore has been overdone to the point of a television show, reunions, and then some. The Cape is nearly synonymous with Martha. And the Hamptons and Fire Island have hosted the same traditions since our parents’ parents first coined the concept of “Summer by the Sea.”
So we’ve gathered two of our favorite East Coast escapes, along with some menu recommendations from Petrossian, to help brighten the prospects of that seaside getaway. Why settle for blasé when you can bask in a remote seaside breeze on your own private getaway?
Southern Charm
If heading south is your summer preference, Savannah and Hilton Head are both popular and beautiful destinations. However both places can get quite touristy, and we prefer a more private vacation. Nearby Tybee Island, GA is the answer you’ve been looking for. A short drive to Savannah and all it has to offer, Tybee Island is your charming southern getaway that offers a seaside breeze and island escape - no clichés to be found.
Our favorite is this incredible home known as Bliss Cottage, designed by Savannah's celebrated designer and preservationist, Jane Coslick. The cottage offers 4 porches with plenty of comfortable seating, dining and entertaining areas. The screened in front porch located in the front of the house is a tranquil treasure! With all of these dining options and incredible views, you’ll want to be sure to spend at least some time enjoying meals at the home. Of course, being near Savannah with its famous oysters calls for a night of oysters and caviar. New England’s Finest
If heading north is your preference, keep going past the Cape, Kittery, and Kennebunkport to find a hidden gem. The lesser known town of Biddeford, ME is home to Biddeford Pool, named for where a large tidal pool is formed in the Saco Bay at the mouth of the Saco River. From breathtaking lighthouses to world class parks and beaches, it’s also worth noting that Travel & Leisure magazine recently acknowledged Biddeford’s restaurant scene as something that should be on every food lover’s bucket list.
It’s easy to picture yourself staying at this lovely New England retreat known as The Blowfish, located just outside the heart of Biddeford Pool right on the beach. With ocean views from nearly every room, you can plan your kayak adventure to nearby Stage Island Monument and learn about its odd history. Take a tour of historic Wood Island and its lighthouse, any of the adjacent parks, or simply stroll out of the living room right into the yard, beach, and surrounding harbor.
When you’re done exploring the area, you’ll be happy to return to this peaceful home on the harbor to unwind, finding incredible views at every turn. The first floor has an open-concept living space made for gathering together, while upstairs, four separate rooms give everyone a private space to rest and relax. Drink coffee on the front deck overlooking the ocean. Grill and dine outside in the backyard. And the shed houses bikes, fishing poles and beach & recreational gear for you to use during your stay!
Eating out is filled with delightful selections thanks to Biddeford’s food scene, but make sure to leave time for a night in with fresh caught Maine lobster from the market, and a selection of our finest caviar.
